Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Aricha
Aricha is a private coffee washing station in Ethiopia’s Yirgacheffe district, part of the renowned Gedeo Zone, known for high-quality arabica coffee. It produces complex flavours, with recent arrivals featuring aromas of coffee blossom and jasmine, bright acidity, and rich stone fruit flavours.
Originally named “Misty Valley,” Aricha was renowned for its coffee under Abdullah Bagersh but was renamed after being sold following the establishment of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) in 2008. Today, it is operated by Cherab na Betesebu and processes cherries from 650 small-scale farmers.
Processing Method
After sorting and washing, the coffee is dried on raised beds for about 10-12 days before export. Despite the challenges of a competitive market and fluctuating cherry prices, successful private processors like Aricha must maintain quality and foster strong community ties to thrive.
