Burundi
Burundi, nestled at the crossroads of East and Central Africa, sits along the Nile-Congo watershed crest. Flanked by Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania, it boasts the stunning Lake Tanganyika along much of its western border. The capital, Bujumbura, lies by this lake and serves as an export port for coffee. However, exporting via Mombasa, Kenya, or Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, involves long overland journeys prone to delays, which can affect coffee quality. Burundi’s terrain is perfect for coffee cultivation, with growing regions spread across the central and northern areas. The country is characterized by hills and mountains, with elevations ranging from Lake Tanganyika at 772 meters above sea level to Mount Heha at 2,670 meters. These hills, known as “collines,” provide an ideal environment for coffee, particularly the old Bourbon variety, to flourish.
