Uganda Bugisu AB

"Bugisu" refers to both a region around Mt. Elgon and the Bugisu tribe, who played a key role in Ugandas coffee history. The Bugisu Cooperative Union, formed in 1954, helped the tribe gain control over the regions coffee, considered the best in Uganda. For decades, "Bugisu" became synonymous with high-quality Ugandan coffee. Despite the decline of cooperative unions in the 1990s, Bugisu coffee remains highly regarded. Kawacom, a major Ugandan exporter, continues to invest in this area through the Sipi Falls Coffee Project, which sources both home-processed and mill-processed coffee from smallholders, preserving the Bugisu legacy.
