Southeast Asia
Coffee production in Southeast Asia and Indonesia began under European colonialism, particularly with Dutch cultivation in Indonesia’s Batavia (now Jakarta). Arabica coffee spread across Indonesia, while Southeast Asian nations like Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines, which favour more humid climates, focused on Robusta and Liberica varieties, with Arabica restricted to higher altitudes.
Despite their colonial origins, these nations have developed distinct coffee traditions, making them emerging producers in the global coffee industry. Today, roasters can collaborate directly with local farmers, creating exciting opportunities that didn’t exist in traditional coffee-consuming regions.
